Boudreau Road and Bellerose Drive Intersection Improvement

Development around a major intersection in St. Albert, Alberta, caused traffic congestion and deteriorating safety for pedestrians and drivers. The City contracted Arcadis IBI Group to reimagine the meeting of Boudreau Road and Bellerose Drive. We provided design, tender preparation and construction services, improving traffic flows and safety for all users.

The intersection of Boudreau Road and Bellerose Drive is extremely active, functioning as the main junction in this area of St. Albert. The intersection features large-scale commercial development, plus a fire station and Royal Canadian Mounted Police station. The City of St. Albert wanted to address the high incidence of collisions and increasing traffic congestion around the intersection as surrounding development increased.

Arcadis IBI developed preliminary and detailed designs to improve the intersection. We reviewed and incorporated the City of St. Albert’s Complete Street Guidelines and its Transportation Safety Plan into our proposals, ensuring our work would adhere to and advance the City’s long-term vision and goals for its transportation infrastructure.

Our design work required a traffic review and alignment alterations to better suit traffic flows. We added a double left turn and “smart channel” islands, which lower vehicle speeds around corners and make crossing pedestrians more visible to drivers. Our design also included modifications to existing sidewalks, streetlights and traffic poles. In addition to our design work, we also provided tender preparation and construction services on this project.

The Boudreau Road and Bellerose Drive Intersection Improvement project has increased the functionality as well as the overall safety of this important intersection in St. Albert.

A new mobile ecosystem is changing the way we interact with and move throughout our cities.
